An alternative way to enhance the magneto-optical response is to exploit the huge increase of the electromagnetic energy density associated with plasmons. We have used two different approaches: (i) Corrugated gold/dielectric interfaces coated with magnetic nanoparticles; (ii) Colloidal dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles. Our study reveals that the magneto-optical activity is enhanced by up to one order of magnitude for wavelengths of resonant plasmons.
Magneto-optical responses are strongly enhanced by plasmonic resonances (up to ×10 times) by plasmons, either using Au platforms (upper left) or by dispersing magnetic nanoparticles in colloidal suspensions (upper right). The lower panels show pictures of arrays of Au nanodisks (left) and Au cavity arrays (right). Collaboration with Prof. A. Roig, ICMAB.
